'If CRPF was not there that day, the whole city …', Ladakh Police DGP said on violence in Leh

Ladakh Director General of Police S.K. D. Singh Jamwal said on Saturday (September 27, 2025) that the security forces were forced to fire the protesters, otherwise the whole Leh would have been burnt to ashes. He said that on Wednesday (September 24, 2025), the violence in the Union Territory capital was tremendous and for this he blamed the vested interests and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.

On Wednesday (September 24), four people were killed and several others were injured in a police firing when the protests were violent demanding state status to Ladakh. The protesters set fire to the local BJP office and allegedly pelted stones at the police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

70 to 80 police in clashes and CRPF Workers also injured- Jamwal

Jamwal dismissed the allegation of Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, which led the movement, that security forces opened indiscriminate firing. He said that this was done to prevent only self -defense and large -scale violence from provoking. The Director General of Police (DGP) said, 'If you look at the footage and the circumstances in which our security forces worked, they did a very commendable job. After the violence started in the afternoon, I salute them to bring the situation under control by four o'clock in the evening. He said that about 70 to 80 police and CRPF personnel have also been injured in the clash.

He said, 'Do you want police force personnel to be killed? This is not possible. Everyone has a life. When they attacked the office of a political party and set it on fire, four women constables of Ladakh police were inside. We saved them with great difficulty. CRPF personnel stationed there were beaten up badly and one of them is still admitted to the army hospital due to spinal injury.

Intelligence information was received to disturb peace- Jamwal

The DGP said, 'The secretariat was attacked, where most of the offices are located. Do you want the employees to die? You don't want this The purpose of violence was to create anarchy and it was our main task to combat anarchy.

Jamwal defended the advance deployment of CRPF, saying that intelligence was information that some elements including Wangchuk were trying to disturb peace. He said, 'If the CRPF was not there that day, I am saying with full confidence that the whole city would have been burnt down.' He said, 'We do not want any force here. we want peace. But peace will come only when citizens understand their responsibility. According to the police chief, on Wednesday (September 24), about six thousand people created a furore.

People of Ladakh have always given police and administration together- Jamwal

He said, 'I am posted here for the second time. I know the mindset of the people of Ladakh. I believe that the people of Ladakh have always supported the police and administration. Whichever I met, they are all embarrassed by this. No one had expected such violence. Jamwal also informed about the casualties of police force members and said that this year two police constables and an inspector died during duty in three different incidents.

He said, 'When floods and landslides took place last month, our police worked day and night. Prior to that, in March, 200-300 vehicles were stuck in snowfall at Changla Pass. We spent the whole night to evacuate people safely. Jamwal said that advertisements have been given for 1,800 government jobs, while police recruitment campaign has also been planned. He sought cooperation from the youth in maintaining peace in Ladakh. He said that the passing out parade of about 500 police recruits was to be done on the previous day, but it had to be postponed. He said, 'We are with you and want you to join the police force.'
